Book Habit - A New Self Publishing Player
Given the controversy with Amazon’s apparent moves to dominate the self publishing market, it’s great to see other players enter the field. So I was happy to pass on information sent to me by Sue Taylor from Book Habit.

She says,

I’m currently helping promote Bookhabit - www.bookhabit.com and a competition they are running for writers of any genre with a US$5000 prize.

Bookhabit is all about helping writers get their work in front of eyes and earn something from it! The site works works by allowing writers to self-publish books online for no charge. Book lovers visiting Bookhabit.com can then sample the first chapter for free and to read on they buy the entire book. It’s a pretty new site and also very exciting as it give writers another space to connect with readers.

From now until May 11th they are currently running an international competition for writers with a US$5000 prize for the winning book. But we are recommending uploading your book by May 8th at the latest.

The competition is free to enter and open to unpublished books, of any genre, with a minimum of 50000 words.

The concept of being able to read the first chapter of a book sounds interesting. Go check it out and let me know what you think.

You can register as an editor at Book Habit and writers can hire you through the community there.

The Writers Cafe Conversation On Self Publishing & Ebooks
The Writers Cafe is proving to be a great networking space. At yet another Writers Cafe we had a lively discussion about the “best” way to get your book published. Self publishing and ebooks featured strongly in the conversation, and a lot of people bookmarked the post and thread as a useful future resource. It cemented my inclination to publish in both ebook and hard copy format.

Let us know what you think. I have asked Sue to check back in on the conversation and also to answer any questions you may have.

  1. Hi Yvonne, thanks for the post :D

    Hello to everyone else reading
It would be great to hear other people’s thoughts and feedback on Book Habit. Also if anyone has any questions about Book Habit or the competition I’ll keep an eye on on this thread.
or you can email me sue@bookhabit.com

    Cheers
    Sue from bookhabit

  2. Hi Sue
Thanks for stopping by and kicking off the conversation. Will be interesting to hear what others think of this concept… not to mention the $5000. :)

  3. I received the same e-mail you did and responded with a couple of questions. My concerns are that publishing on BookHabit.com might be a detriment for someone who is seeking traditional publication. Some traditional publishers do not want anything that has been published before in any format. I have one client in particular I’m thinking about, but before I recommend he use BookHabit, I’d like some more information.

So far, I have not received a response to my e-mailed questions. Perhaps Sue can respond here. Thanks!

Yes, the issues of who owns the copyright and what rights you have to reuse the material is an important one.

Look forward to hearing Sue’s thoughts and insights on this.

  5. Hi everyone

The author maintains their copyright at all times and can remove their book from the Bookhabit at any time.
So copyright belong to the author 100% forever.
at no time does Bookhabit own the copyright,

    But
An author does need to be aware that submitting onto Bookhabit or self publishing does not fit well with some publishers. Check with the specific publisher to see their particular view on this. As there is no issue with removing it, there shouldn’t be a real issue for the publisher. However, not all publishers have embraced the internet or worked out quite how to deal with it yet.

    I hope this helps

  6. Hi Sue
Thanks for your insights. I think you’re right about many publishers still needing to get their head around internet implications.

However, some publishers won’t touch a book if it has been previously published. Even if it is taken down, it has still been published.

It’s great that BookHabit allows for content to be removed and that the author retains the copyright.

Your advice to check with the publisher is a good one. Research and having a marketing plan is the way to go.

  7. I think it looks like an interesting alternative to some of the other self-publishers out there. And, of course, the $5,000 prize is something to check out!

I´ll be looking at this site a bit more closely and come back if I have any more questions.

  8. Hi Genesis
Nothing like $5000 to catch the eye, is there?

I’m wondering whether more people are going to go with Amazon’s Book Surge.

If you can still sell your self publised book on Amazon and not be “buried” in amongst the other listings there, other self publishing options are certainly worth exploring.
