The Dilemma: What Do You Do When You’re Caught Between Two Rising Rivers With Nowhere to Go?
We were caught in our car between two raging rivers. It had been a great trip to Australia’s Northern Territory, until the storms hit. This is a region in outback Australia, that is usually parched and dry. We were traveling between Alice Springs and Mount Isa, a journey of about 1000 miles which we’d done many times. It should have been straightforward. This time was different.
Raging, unrelenting storms hammered the red earth for days. And then, as if to tease, they eased off. We spread our damp clothes on the road to dry in the few spots of sunshine whenever the storm abated, but then the rain would start again. The river we’d crossed many miles back, and which had been just a gentle stream, was now impassable. The river in front of us was racing wildly, and too dangerous to cross in our car, lest we be swept downstream. Both rivers were rising rapidly with us in the path of a flood.
There were other travelers trapped too, and we were close to an outback hotel. We heard that the night before the supervisor of a road gang also trapped between the two rivers, had been killed by one of his workers. As you can imagine, we weren’t sleeping too well at all in the front of our pick up truck, and not just because of the cramped space or the rain.
This was well before the days of cell phones and ready internet access. We heard on the radio, that food drops were being made by airplane, but no one seemed to know we were there.

Now you’ve got me sitting on the edge of my chair … I can’t wait to read the sequel.
Hi Laura - I wonder if I would have blogged it live if it was in current times. LOL. It was a really scary (but interesting) experience.
Hi, Yvonne!
Can’t wait to find out how you got out of that one! As for my entry, I’m still mulling over my own possible topics. Wanted to let you know that todays’ post at Writer’s Notes is an announcement of the project.
Jeanne
Hi Yvonne,
On Friday morning at 4 AM Pacific Daylight Time, my problem post goes live. Here’s the link — not active until then:

It’s a serious issue for people who blog and don’t have a lot of technical skills — like me. My story on how I decided to move from my hosting company to a new one. Then Monday, the answer. (I hope the trackback shows up on the right sites!!).
As a side note, I tried to send you a note via the “Contact” page and via the “site author” page, but I get a 404 not found error on either one. Hope you see this comment!
Hi Jeanne - Thanks so much for helping us spread the word. Coming up with a topic is half the fun, isn’t it? It certainly got me thinking.
Hi Scot
I can’t wait to read about your hosting company, as I’m thinking of a new hosting company for a possible second blog.
I have this blog in the hands of a tech whiz to fix all those little glitches like the contact page. Thanks for your patience with that.
