If You’re On the Web You Need These Free Ebooks

Martin Neumann of Small Office Australia was kind enough to give me some blog feedback. He included some advice about developing information products related to my blog topic - Grow Your Writing Business.

As I’ve been researching this, I thought I’d share a few tips I’ve learned. The first and most obvious starting point when considering an information product is the ebook. These can be offered for sale or given away for free and are a great way to promote yourself as a writer. Firstly, let’s look at free ebooks.

Use Free Ebooks to Promote Your Writing Business

A well written ebook with useful practical advice can help to -

1. Establish & consolidate your position as an authority in a specfic niche

2. Tap into word of mouth recommendations to recommend your ebook

3. Bring people back after they’ve read the ebook to check on how you implement the strategies and tips you wrote about

4. Bring new traffic e.g. through social media networks

5. Encourage reviews of your ebook

6. Encourage links to your blog and ebook download

7. Increase the potential for affiliate income through more visitors

8. Develop confidence in other products you offer (for free or for sale)

9. Develop a relationship with your readers and prospective clients

10. Establish and grow your brand

Free Ebooks I Can Recommend

These ebooks have a lot of practical tips for anyone wanting to use the web to promote their business, to make money online or simply to improve their blog or website. If you are open to fine tuning your approach, these offer useful information on topics ranging from writing pillar articles, monetizing your blog, SEO, building traffic and putting your audience first.

As not everything is relevant, I regard them as “working documents”. I print them out and read them with a highlighter and a pen in hand and a packet of post it notes nearby… sacrilege to some but it works for me. I find this alleviates information overload. Annotating it as you go is also a ready reference for information retrieval down the track.

  1. OK, I have a question. I’ve begun looking into this but don’t know where to begin. Do you have a sort of outline to go about how to get started…publishing the ebook, hosting it, companies to go through should you want to try to sell it, etc?

  2. Hi Dana - I have an interesting interview lined up about this. Keep an eye out over the next few weeks. I may also include your question in my JUST ASK series feature.

  3. This is a great list! I already have Yaro Starak’s e-book and Mihaela Lica’s e-book.

Thanks for providing this. I’ll have to keep my eyes open to see if I notice any others.

  4. OMG! You put me on the same list with Yaro!!! I LOVE YOU! I have no words to tell you how happy I am.

By the way, some links in my book didn’t work. I’ve corrected that issue and if you experienced problems with your copy, now you can download the ebook again.

  5. Hi Laura - I’ve since found a few others I’ll also share but on different topics. I’m still reading them so wanted to reserve my judgement just yet.

  6. Hi Mig - Yaro is a fellow Aussie and lives about 2 hours from me. That’s the only connection, but somehow that is enough to make me think that all things are possible. I like his approach of balancing business, others and self :)

  7. I’ve got two… well a booklet called The 3 Secrets of Making Your Writing Pay available at www.aboutfreelancewriting.com and
Through the Labyrinth of Writing Your Book which you can get at www.writingwithvision.com

Another great resource is the free material at www.heartofbuisness.com - not specifically writing, but helpful to anyone growing a business.
