Stumbleupon Brings Traffic

Stumbleupon Brings Traffic

When checking traffic for my Great Places to Hang Out for Mothers Who Write post, I noticed I had 115 hits for that post alone from Stumbleupon. Sharon Hurley Hall from Get Paid to Write, had added the post to Stumbleupon and included an excerpt. Thanks Sharon.

When you download the Stumbleupon toolbar, you can give a thumbs up or thumbs down to specific web pages and blog posts, including the home page. You can search or stumble randomly or by category and tags. Readers can also add your pages and review them on Stumbeupon.

Many bloggers are saying they have more traffic from Stumbleupon than Digg these days.

  1. My husband introduced me to StumbleUpon (which he’d in turn heard of from a friend) probably a little more than a year ago, and we love it!

  2. You’re welcome, Yvonne. I’ve been using StumbleUpon for a while, mostly to bookmark writing resources (both my own and others). It definitely brings a spike in traffic - and it’s very helpful if you need to find stuff later.

  3. I’ll take a Stumble over a Digg any day of the week!! Last week I had one article that got Dugg and Stumbled. I got 7 visitors from Digg and over 2000 from Stumble.

  4. Is it blogging etiquette to “stumble” your own articles, or is it hoped that someone else does it for you? I’m not sure what the best way is (though I know there are no rules for this kind of thing.) I have the toolbar installed, I’m just a bit self-conscious about stumbling my own material. Feel free to tell me to “get over it”. I’ll be happy to :)

  5. Hi Rory - It is perfectly fine to “stumble” your own articles. In fact, it makes good sense to do so. However, I would issue a few cautions/suggestions.

    1. Only “stumble” posts you think are “stumbleworthy” - i.e. if someone stumbles upon your post, and gives it the thumbs down, that is not so good. A negative review is worse. I know we can’t control people’s opinions, but the post is an advertisement in a sense for would be visitors, so make it a good one. Make it count.

    2. Don’t only “stumble” your own posts. This is spamming, and is very obvious.

    3. “Stumble” other excellent posts, particularly in a related area. This is like linking. Those people will visit to check out your blog. They may become a regular visitors.

    4. With a new blog, while the temptation to get instant traffic looms large, don’t “stumble” your own articles until you have something to show. You have to instil confidence in the reader. No one wants to visit an empty car lot.

Hope this helps. Welcome to the world of Stumbleupon. I guess one way to look at Stumbleupon is as a cross between a search engine and social networking. They are currently in talks with Ebay for a possible $75 million buyout, with Google as a previous financial stakeholder. Google is going to introduce something similar with their toolbar.

  6. Julia - Great to see you here. StumbleUpon certainly seems to be growing in popularity. Thanks for stopping by.

Sharon - The bookmarking/list feature is a useful one as you say. Thanks for voting for Grow Your Writing Business on StumbleUpon and getting this whole discussion started.

Char - Interesting to hear you say that StumbeUpon drives more traffic to your site than Digg. I wonder if Digg works better for certain types of sites, and/or the demographics of people who prefer to use one or the other. Possibly nothing to do with that. StumbleUpon is so easy with just a click on a toolbar.

  7. Hi I am new to the blogging world. I am finding it a great way to write each day. I noticed on your site you are talking about the StumbleUpon verses Digg. Can anyone explain to me what this exactly is. I was about to download the StumbleUpon toolbar but realized I had no idea what it’s purpose was. All I know is I set up a Blog with wordpress.
    I would appreciate any feedback.
    Thanks, Maribeth aka marnini
